• Location

Nikolaev or Mykolaiv is a region located in Ukraine’s southern tip directly facing the Black Sea. It has a land area of about 24,500 square kilometers and a population of over 1 million people.

The region’s administrative center or capital city is also named after itself and sits atop a peninsula in the steppe region of Ukraine.

The most convenient way to get to the city is by flying to Odessa from Kiev and subsequently taking a train from Odessa to Nikolaev. The short stopover in Odessa makes the trip even more worthwhile because of the scenic views you’ll see on the way to Nikolaev.

• Climate

You’ll essentially get the best of both worlds with Nikolaev’s weather. Unlike in other parts of Ukraine, winter season in Nikolaev is just mild while summer gets really hot and dry.

So when you decide to pay the city a visit, you might want to take into account what season you’ll be traveling in so that you can pack right. Just remember that from January to June, the average temperature of the city is below 4 degrees Celsius while from July to December, it could play between 22 to 25 degrees Celsius.

• History

The city of Nikolaev was founded by Prince Grigory Potemkin, in 1789. The once unassuming town by the mouth of the Ingul River was intended as a shipyard where most of the ships of the Russian Navy fleet were built. It is an industry that is still very much alive in the city today.

The Prince Potemkin ordered the city to be named after St. Nicholas, the patron saint of seafarers. Coincidentally, the day by which Russian forces captured the Turkish fortress of Ochokav also fell on St. Nicholas Day.

• Tourism

Unlike in other cities where tourists visit to marvel at their natural and architectural wonders or to get a glimpse of their rich and storied history, Nikolaev, on the other hand, is known for a different reason - beautiful women.Ukrainians, in general, are blessed with Slavic ethnicity which translates to beautiful physical features.
